Welcome

The Silicon Valley Cisco Users Group (SVCUG) is a Bay Area Cisco user group that meets regularly for the purposes of learning Cisco technologies, growing in networking knowledge, and sharing user experiences and ideas.

The SVCUG offers three meetings a month. There are two Saturday Labs and one Monthly Meeting. The Saturday Labs offer the users a place to meet and use Cisco equipment (provided by us). The Monthly Meeting is used for technical presentations. Typically a Cisco professional will deliver a Cisco technology presentation they are subject matter experts in - but, on occasion, we will have someone outside of Cisco deliver a networking related presentation.

Please read our special thanks to Cisco Press here

Month - January

Topic: SAN Basics 101  (Status: COMPLETED, Followup: As requested, we will take the theory learned and move it to practical application. The next Saturday Lab will focus on applying what we learned)

Presenter: Luis Chanu

Agenda:
  1. VERY INFORMAL…no slides…no “formal” presentation…just a “town hall meeting” format about FibreChannel and SAN Basics 101 to help people understand what needs to be done to get their fibrechannel working in a small environment
  2. Focus will be on FibreChannel, with some mention of iSCSI
  3. Basic comparison of FibreChannel (a.k.a. Storage Networking) to Ethernet (a.k.a. Data Networking) to help enforce terminology/concepts. Some topics include WWN vs PWWN, VSANs, Buffer Credits, Zones, Zone Sets, LUN Masking, etc…
  4. Live demo on how to upgrade an MDS switch to the latest code release
  5. Discuss the basic configuration elements needed to configure an MDS switch
  6. Via CLI, develop/build a configuration on a live MDS switch

He will also be touching on security issues for this topic.
