SVCUG Special Event: Introduction To Network Virtualization
October 21 @ 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Hello SVCUG Members,
In our SVCUG Saturday Labs, we’ve had numerous discussions about Cisco’s ACI technology. Out of those discussions, many of you asked about NSX, and wanted to better understand it. Given the interest, I said I’d see what I could put together… I reached out to VMware, and they were gracious enough to sponsor this Introduction To Network Virtualization Special Event.
Just to be clear, this will NOT be NSX vs ACI discussion, or a NSX on ACI discussion, or a comparison of the two technologies/solutions. As Cisco and VMware will tell you, each technology has its place, and you can reach out to your local account manager to have those discussions.
The goal of this all-day Introduction To Network Virtualization presentation is to help everyone understand what the various components of NSX are, and how they work together to deliver a virtualized network. This WILL be a technical discussion with a LOT of whiteboarding. No PowerPoint slides here! 🙂
Given the introductory NSX class is 5-days in length, and we only have 1 day, we will not be able to cover all of NSX. Our focus is on the main core components, especially around Network Virtualization and Security. In order to get through as much material as possible, expect this to be a fast-paced day, so come ready to learn.
Here is an overview of the topics we hope (time permitting) to cover:
- VERY high-level overview of NSX (brief)
- Underlay and MTU (VERY brief)
- Cluster Types / Purpose (Management, Compute, Edge)
- Quick review of VMware items
- vCenter server
- vSphere Distributed Switches
- NSX Manager
- Distributed Firewall
- Security Groups
- Security Policies
- NSX Controllers
- VXLAN (Quick recap, as we just went over this at a recent Saturday Lab)
- Logical Switches & Transport Zone
- Edge Service Gateways
- ECMP vs HA
- Services — “Swiss Army Knife”
- Distributed Logical Routers
- LR Control VM discussion
Very light breakfast/snacks will be served, along with sandwiches for lunch.
